The Compact MACP arises from the EU-founded Hoverspill project, included in the 7th FP regarding the implementation of a hovercraft for high speed Oil Spill emergency interventions.
Compact MACP first important characteristic consists in the use of a very powerful diesel engine. This is installed on a vehicle of very compact dimensions, within 250 cm of operative width with a high percentage of cargo space.
The power provided by the diesel engine allows performances at sea also with difficult marine weather conditions. This achievement has been obtained in combination with the adoption of particular devices – patented – to compensate the natural hovercrafts tendency to bend on one side when turning.
Compact MACP was studied to solve different problems: from reliability to wear, from driving easiness to flexibility in installing equipments. One of the target was the possibility of fixing also during a mission in difficult environments.
Compact MACP(250 cm.wide) characteristics permit, unique worldwide in the ACV’s field, its homologation as working vehicle.

The Compact dimension problem (Solved...)

An increase in scale from a 2m-width vehicle to a 2.5m-width is sensitive. The net weight of the ACV increases from 300 kg to 800 kg, while the gross weight increases from 550 to 1800/2000 kg, the internal volumes quintuple. In this way the size switches from a “comparable“ big motorcycle to a light truck.

In the bigger dimensions the whole construction is influenced by greater charges and by the powers involved. The lift has to be separated in order to exploit the greater efficiency of the dedicated fans. This means more transmission elements and mechanical settings. The possibility of realizing the reverse motion, which in smaller vehicles can be optional, becomes compulsory. The trim cannot be anymore controlled by the pilot’s body movement and proper controls are needed.
The bottom has to support a weight of 1800/2000 kg. also on a sharp stone.

The technical difficulties for the realization of a hull 2.5m-width are numerous and can be summarized in the following points :
• Unlike the displacement or planning hulls of boats the “Dynamic Hull” of a hovercraft is a structural component subjected to stresses of a complex nature that require an in-depth analysis that is not easily to identify “a priori” . The hull is easily exposed to damages and deformations during the stop on rough terrain or to the impact and damage against emerging obstacles when the vehicle is moving at high speed.
• The conduction at cruise speed, straight on in calm waters requires limited power; temporary and particular situations (starting, curbing waves and wind) together with the exigency of a good load capacity require the highest peak powers. Moreover more peak power is required to curve at high speed when inertial situations present a very complex dynamic and not easily predictable (there is a combination of rolling and pitching movements due to the cushion characteristics, to the weights distribution, to the thrust and to the drift angle).
• The Safety Rules and the requirements of the more evolved part of the marked (Military/Defense, Fire brigades) expressly require diesel engines. Diesel engines with a high power/weight ratio have become available only in recent years.
• Various problems are caused by the transmission system characterized by large propellers with high moments of inertia and by the cooling system that cannot take advantage of water-suction as the boats do. An hovercraft is in some ways closer to a land vehicle but subject to the stress of a marine environment, moreover at high speed conditions.
Investigating the market it is possible to assess that the above mentioned points are a barrier for the constructors, in fact there are few vehicles existing on the market presenting a design matching with the dimensions necessary to exploit the total width of 2.5m (that is the limit for easy transportability). This value allows to have, keeping a L/B ratio relatively low, lengths comprised between 5m and 7m, with a consequent interior space comparable to the one that can be find in a jeep or on a “light truck”.
